Called to Serve

"Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work ... and faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work." - D&C 4:3-5

¡HOLA! FROM ARLINGTON TEXAS

Just when you think Elder C couldn't be more positive and enthusiastic, he tops his previous week's message with an even more exuberant proclamation of his love for missionary work and the Gospel!  He continues to write/speak in Spanish, so here's the translation:

His current direct address is:
Elder David Coffman

Study, Study, Study

¡Hola!  I received the package from the Lloyd family about three weeks ago  and I received everything.  I don’t have many pictures, but I took some at the baptismal services.  Don’t worry Mother jajaja I am going to use the CDs now and in Mexico, but I don’t have enough pictures to send them now.  I can attach pictures to the emails, but I always forget my camera when I write the email.  It is hard sometimes to take a lot of pictures because we are always on our bikes and there is not a lot to take pictures of.  But whenever something special happened, I always took a picture.  I hope Anne feels better.  Tell her to be careful!  And that sounds really fun that you two, Ali and Anne were able to get yogurt.  And where did Michelle get the Ravens jersey?  I like it jaja  The baptism we had was with Rasalio and Emilio Pérez.  I didn’t baptize them.  I man from Florida did it.  It was fun because he doesn’t speak Spanish so when he said the baptismal prayer, he said it in a heavy white boy (guero) accent jaja It was so funny!  But it was really good.  They are going to endure to the end!  I know it! jaja Do you know what it means to endure to the end?  I think this week all of you should learn more about the Doctrine of Christ.  It is really simple, but still very important.

Tell Elder Parkinson that in the field we can’t send emails to anyone except our families and to the mission president.  We don’t have a branch, but our stake is in Arlington.  And good job with your Spanish also.  Tell him the field is amazing and that I love to teach real people.  It’s a lot better than the MTC.

Mother, good job on your exam!   And tell Ali that she looks beautiful!  And that I love her muchisisisisisisisisísimo! jaja

Michelle, you can send the baby voice to Ali if you want. (: I don’t know when I am going to México, but I hope I go in about two or three weeks.  I like Texas, but México is better.  When I tell investigators I am waiting for a visa to Mérida they always tell me “¡Aaaaaahhhhhh el Yucatán!  How beautiful!  There is a beach and it’s not dangerous like the rest of México.”  I’m really excited to go there, but while I’m here in Texas, I am going to work very hard to save souls here! jaja

¡Hermanito!  I love your advice!  Thank you so much!  Actually, I was thinking in the saying no se dé por vencido (never give up) and I realized we can do it through the Atonement.  It’s really cool! jaja I decided that when I get back from my mission, I am always going to study the scriptures like I’m doing it now because they are so important.  It seems to me this week every scripture that I read talked about hope, charity and faith.  They are so important but charity is the most important.  I know this.  It is really cool.  I love reading Ether 12 and Alma 32 and Moroni 7.  They are really good.  And also Helaman 5.  Thank you so much for everything.  I still have not written Alma, but I’m going to do it maybe today.  Tell her I am sorry because I have been really busy.  But I want to speak Spanish with you always after my mission jaja Is that ok?  Bye.

Also, little brother, how can I better utilize the members in the ward?  It’s hard here...what did you do in your mission?  See ya later and never give up!  Ever!!  May God bless you family!
(Stephen’s note – the following was mostly in English so I copied and pasted – the translated parts are italicized)

And now i'd like to share something i learned yesterday. We were learning about the plan of what we need to "put on the alter" when we go on a mission and one of those things was negative thoughts. negative thoughts are in the adversary's territory. we don't need to be negative about anything or  have a bad attitude about anything becuse no matter what happens, our lord, savior, y redentor jesucristo siempre esta aqui con nosotros. yo se eso. (and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, is always there with us.  I know this.) alma 7 i think verse 11 says what he suffered for. read around and find it, but keep in mind that la expiacion es infinita (the Atonement is infinite). christ suffered everything for us so we wouldn't have to if we repent. but if we don't, then we will have to suffer like he did ( d&C 19 16-19 i think) then in juan (John) 16:33, it says something really good. read it as well. i don't have my scriptures with me right now, but when i read it i felt real good and i want to share that with you. also remember to always remember to have faith, hope, and charity. read in preach my gospel what it says about those 3 things in the chapter about developing christ like attributes. try and do these things for family night(: adios y les quiero (bye and I love you)!

FROM THE MTC

Sorry for posting, but one of Elder Coffman's blog managers has an affection for pigs and couldn't resist posting this photo. The pig is a memory "stick".

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - 2/25/12

As always, Elder Coffman's messages are written in Spanish. Thankfully, his brother can translate.

¡Hola familia!  Yesterday was my first day in Arlington.  I still don’t know when I am going to Mérida, but hopefully soon!  I have no idea, it could be this week, in a month, or maybe in six months, but it doesn’t matter.  I will serve wherever I may be.  And that is so cool with Cameron!  I’m really happy and proud of him.  Tell him that a mission is hard sometimes, but the blessings that you can receive are better!  I had two baptisms Saturday and they were amazing!  It is a little sad because they have more family that is going to be baptized, but I’m not going to see it.  Also, I gave the Priesthood in Spanish!  I didn’t have any idea what to say when I was giving the blessing, but it was good jaja and it was really cool.  I gave it to Juan Cuevas and he is really funny jaja well, I love you familia!

Mother, how are you?  Good job on your phlebotomy!  I knew you could do it! jaja and I don’t know when I will be at the Cowboy’s stadium, but if I go, I will take a lot of pictures.  Here in the mission field, I am not taking as many pictures as in the MTC, but I still have good pictures.  So, Uncle Mark is living in Utah now?  I am going to pray for your class.  I do it every night!   Well, bye!  I love you.

Michelle, that is really funny what happened with Ali!  jajaja I love you too!  And how are you liking wrestling?  And training george is really good, but remember always that Millcreek is better than Mueller Park!  jaja Oh, and don’t send the thing in your telephone when I was using my baby voice to Ali because that would be super embarrassing! jajaja sj

Daddy, thanks for transcribing my letters jaja I hope you are well.  Every time I teach a child, I think of when you told me I need to make jokes with kids and that has helped me a lot.  I love you and thanks for everything.

Hermanito, I no longer have your twin as a companion.  Now I have Elder Smith and he also speaks really good Spanish.  I forgot last time, but good job on your piano at USU!  Have you heard anything else from that?  I know I have to focus on my mission.  The only time when it is hard is when I receive letters and packages and other such things.  But the rest of the time it is really easy for me since my Spanish is not very good and I have to focus on it and also on learning more about the Gospel.  I love the Gospel because it is simple, but at the same time essential.  Also, I love the saying no se dé por vencido (never give up)!  jaja Well, I am going to try to write better in my journal, and also in my letters.  Thanks for everything!

Send this message to Elder Jordan Parkinson because I can’t send emails to other people.

(Stephen’s note – he wrote the following messages mostly in English – so I just copied and pasted)

MINERAL WELLS, TEXAS 2/10/12 - 2/14/12

Elder Coffman's letters are a bit out of order, so the previous post actually occurred AFTER this information. This is his first letter sent from the field -- Mineral Wells, Texas, part of the Fort Worth Mission.

Hi family! I arrived at TX just fine! Hopefully you got the email from the president with the picture!! I really like it here. I’m in a town called Mineral Wells. I will be leaving to another town on Tuesday called Weatherford. It will be hard to leave this area because I already feel attached! We have had some really good lessons so far. I had my first contact right out the airport! It was crazy, but fun. I then went to the mission president’s wife’s house and we had pancakes and homemade syrup! It was great! Then we went out to Mineral wells.
My comp’s name is elder Hansen. He is from Idaho. He is my trainer. Oh yeah I almost forgot to tell you. I remember how much I love BBQ food here! We are going to have brisket here tomorrow and I’m so excited! That’s one of the reasons I love the summer I’m just so excited to get good BBQ food! And I had totally forgotten about it while I was in the MTC. The first night we had a really good lesson with a less active member who hasn’t been to church for a year. He spoke Spanish, but liked English better and my companion doesn’t speak Spanish (I have been teaching him a little Spanish though) so we just taught him in English. He said he didn’t know what it was we said, but we made it so he would go to church Sunday and loved it!  It was so exciting.
I’ve had so many good experiences. So far I’ve only been out for a couple of days. It’s so much better out here because they are real people and I love making their lives better. The area is really poor though. Most houses are welfare and are either run down shacks, trailers, or little houses. The people are really nice though. I love it out here. I still can’t wait to see Mexico though. It’ll be hard to leave, because I already feel so attached, but I know I’ll love it in Mexico too.
My p-days are on Monday, but in Mineral Wells the library is closed on Monday so I won’t be able to email until next week in Weatherford. I almost had a chance to go to Arlington in which there are a ton of different churches out here. It’s like the same amount of church buildings as Utah, except all of them are different faiths. Some of them are just different faiths because they are on different streets. Like the South Side Church of Christ and the Sixth Avenue Church of Christ.  Apparently they hate each other and are going to have a war someday even though they are the same religion. It’s crazy ha ha! Well, I love all you guys and I will email you next week.  I can’t check email until then, so I won’t know what you sent me. What is Daddy’s email address? Oh yeah and it snowed out here! I never thought I would see it but it did.
Well, adios!
PS, I think I’m kind of getting a TX accent yawl ha-ha the funniest hearing Mexicans with TX accents - but I’m getting one!
Adios

WEATHERFORD TEXAS ... AT LEAST FOR A FEW DAYS

Elder Coffman arrived in TX on 2/10/12. He was assigned to Mineral Wells for about six days and then moved to Weatherford. He will serve in Arlington starting 2/21 and remain there until his visa is ready. Letters can be sent to the mission home address in the previous post and they will forward to him if he leaves before the Monday mail deliveries.

Monday, 2/20/12 – Weatherford, TX

First, my preparation day is Monday. Thanks for the package, that was really nice of you!!  And thanks for being so kind.  My address for my house is going to change.  I am in Weatherford until tomorrow and then I think I am going to Arlington where the Cowboy’s stadium is, but I don’t know if I will be able to see it.  In Arlington, I am going to wait for my visa.  And I can call when I go to the airport.  Well, I don’t have any idea when I’ll do it, but I will call!  I’m sorry about my handwriting – I don’t like writing, but I am not going to write a lot.  I like Texas, but I think Mexico will be better.  Right now my companions are really good Spanish speakers.  It is a little hard for me because they speak a lot in the lessons, but I am still learning.  And I have made a goal: I am going to memorize a scripture every day in my mission.  Elder Collins told me President Monson said if you do it, you will have a photographic memory.  I have already memorized Isaiah 1:18, Moroni 7:45-47, 3 Nephi 5:13, Alma 32:21, Alma 41:10 and right now I am learning John 3:16-17.  I love the scriptures and I know that when I have them memorized, the Spirit is going to help me when I teach investigators.

Mother, last week, I was in Mineral Wells, where there are a lot of cowboys that wear cowboy boots and cowboy hats.  I have seen many bulls with long horns and I want to eat them! I have only eaten brisket one time.  But all the food I have eaten is really good.  Good luck with your phlebotomy class.  I pray for you every night (: and thanks for the package again.  I love you.

Daddy, thanks for the update on the wrestling.  Good job to all the wrestlers.  And also, I don’t know if they have a hot sauce that is hotter than Texas Pete, but my companion was a chef in Florida and he can cook really well so I will ask him.  That’s too bad with the Corry’s.  I will pray for them.  The translation of my last letter was really good.  Tell Cameron I am very happy with his decision to serve a mission.  And where is Matt Parrish going?  Well, I love you.

Hermanito, I have a companion that is just like you!  He loves Latin girls, Spanish and everything.  He speaks so good that he can lie to the Mexicans and say he is a Mexican from Mexico City :) many jajaja and I am trying to speak Spanish all the time, but it is a little hard.  But my companions can talk very well and I am learning a lot every day.  I love the Mexicans.  They are super buenos.  And I am learning a lot of slang jaja and I am going to write Alma also.  It seems like I have forgotten something I wanted to say, but I cannot remember it.  Well…all is well jaja

Michelle, I am sorry for not writing you more.  But I had a good appointment Saturday.  My companions and I were teaching a woman and her friend and I received an idea from the Spirit to share Enos 12:6 because she had many problems with her husband and she thought that since she was going to get baptized in like a week that she should be getting good blessings, but, after hearing that scripture, she knew that God still loves her.  I know God loves us and everything He does is for His work and glory.  Everything He does is for our good.  Sometimes, we think a Church standard is dumb, or not fun, but remember what Alma 42:10 says, wickedness never was happiness.  You can tell this to your girlfriends when they don’t want to choose the right.  Well, I love you.

Familia, I am sorry if I don’t write good letters, but I am trying.  And I am sorry if this letter is missing anything or if I didn’t answer any of your questions.  Please pray for missionary work all of the time.  Not only for me, but for every missionary.  Well, I love you.

With love,

Élder Coffman

FINDING JOY AND SWEET BABY RAY'S WHEREVER HE GOES!

All who know Elder Coffman will agree that he has a constant positive attitude and can find happiness and the good in all situations and places. After just a few days in Fort Worth, where he is temporarily assigned before heading to Merida, Mexico, Elder C has taught several investigators, shared his testimony, expressed gratitude for all of his blessings, asked all of us to read the Book of Mormon, has fallen in love with Texas and would consider retiring there!  Upon arrival, the Mission President's wife, Sister Sagers, served Elder C's favorite -- brisket with none other than Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce; which happens to be the Mission President's favorite also.  It's great that in the midst of working so hard, learning a new language and proclaiming the Gospel, Elder C has found bits and pieces of joy in the little things like this.

His new P-Day is Monday and hopefully, he will send news that he's on his way to Mexico this week; apparently the visas are becoming available again. Regardless of when he departs, Elder C will continue to work diligently and joyfully. To say that he is happy is an understatement.

For now, you may send Dear Elders to the Fort Worth mission home or mail things to:

YOU WERE NOT SENT HERE TO FAIL

Elder Coffman was his MTC District Leader and several of the Hermanas and Elders wrote to say that he gave them words of encouragement and set a great example of obedience and commitment. One of his phrases was, "We are not here to fail."  The following is a quote from Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley:

"You did not come into the world to fail. You came into the world to succeed. You have accomplished much so far. It is only the beginning. As you move forward on the trail of life, keep the banner of faith in self ever before you. You may not be a genius. You may not be exceptionally smart. but you can be good, and you can try. And you will be amazed at what might happen when in faith you take a step forward."

FINAL LETTER FROM THE MTC - 2/9/12

¡Hola Familia! How are you? I am very well. I am really excited to be leaving tomorrow. My mission is just Fort Worth, Dallas. It’s a different mission. I love being a missionary. I am learning so many things every day. This week, I realized that I have been blessed with a wonderful family! Thank you. Also, I have been blessed with great friends. Thank you. Here in the MTC, there are so many missionaries that have challenges in their families and with their lives at home, but I feel that God has given me an almost perfect family! Thanks again. I know why God has called all the young men in the Church to serve. This work is so important. I feel honored to help God with His work and glory. And also I think I am a better man because I am a missionary. It doesn’t matter to me if it is hard or not because Jesus Christ has suffered for me, and every person in the world’s history. His Atonement is infinite. Every person needs to use it. And He can help them with things besides sins. Did you know that? It’s infinite. I love the Atonement. And you all should thank God every day for it. I have started to read Jesus the Christ and it is a wonderful book. And I still have not received the memory cards. I still want them. Thanks. I think that when I go to Mexico, I will just send CDs with pictures because I don’t want to lose the memory cards. Thanks.

Mother! ¡Feliz cumpleaños! I am going to call you today, maybe at night. I hope you have received your letter. I have taken 220 pictures and I am going to send them in a box that has things I don’t need. Happy birthday! And I am going to take a picture in front of the Cowboys stadium. It’s funny because I am going to take a picture in the Mayan ruins also, so I am going to have pictures with two famous buildings. Good job on reading the scriptures. They are very important, and I know it. And I pray for you every day. I love you Mother!

Stephen, good luck with your CNA, and mother too. How is school? I forgot you wrote me last week so I don’t have much to say, except that I asked my district if they had heard of Maná and all the sisters said “of course!!!” They love Maná!!! And then I sang Amor, Amor, Amor and it was so cool jajajaja have you heard “The Miracle of a Mission” by Jeffery R. Holland? It’s a really good talk. Well, I love you!!

Papi!!! (Daddy) Be careful with the anaranjo (I think I spelled this wrong) but I hope you are feeling better after your fall. And thanks for the Superbowl information. I ate kipper snacks that day and they were delicious! I am going to eat the rest today. Do you have a job? Well, I love you. And thanks for everything. You have been a great example, just like the whole family.

Michelle, ¿cómo estás? I hope your school is going good. It is very important. And I love you. And good job with reading the scriptures. Bye.

¡Hasta la vista familia!

FORT WORTH BOUND!

After just three weeks in the MTC, Elder Coffman and his companion Elder Matthew Hill were temporarily reassigned to serve in the Texas Fort Worth Spanish Speaking mission until they receive their visas for Mexico. They touched down in the Lone Star State this morning and will probably be knocking on doors Monday morning! Elder C will feel right at home as Fort Worth is famous for its cattle runs, stockyards and BBQ!

READY OR NOT A CHANGE IN PLANS! A Short Layover in Fort Worth!

¡Hola Familia!  Well, my life was crazy about two hours ago!!  Elder Hill and I cut our hair and then I went to get the mail and we found two letters that told us that all the missionaries in my district (Elder Hill, Elder Bahr, and Elder Packard and I) received “temporary assignments” and then the sister in the travel services department told Elder Hill and I that we have to leave at three this Friday (2-3-2012) in the morning!!!
Elder Hill and I were really scared and very excited!!  But (i'm just gonna write in ingles now because i want to make sure you get what i'm trying to say) the card said that we don't leave until next friday. So elder hill and i are going to fortworth texas, spanish speaking NEXT FRIDAY, 2/10/12, and elder packard and bahr are going to boise! haha i'm so glad i'm not going there! although i don't want to be near dallas either without a raiders tie!
We will be there until our visas come and we can call you for five minutes so make sure you answer your phone! idk when i can call but just be ready. and we are not leaving until next friday ( 2-10-12) (Elder Coffman switches back to Spanish here) the day after Mother’s birthday! And also, I already sent letters to the Lloyd family and the Parkinson family so you should tell them that I am not leaving tomorrow (2-3-2012).  Thanks.

Well, this week went really well.  Last night, Elder Hill and I taught our TRC progressing investigator for 30 minutes!  It went really well!!! And he told us that Elder Hill and I were the first ones to commit him to being baptized and he has worked at the MTC for a long time!  But he told me that I still need to practice more, but my Spanish is good also.
Now I feel that I can love all the people with a strong love…like charity.  It is a little weird because before my mission, I couldn’t love strangers, but now I can, and I love it!  And also, now I know the importance of the Book of Mormon.  Well family, will you read the Book of Mormon every day individually and also as a family?  And also, you should kneel every day when you pray because it shows more respect for God and his Son, Jesus Christ.  I love the Book of Mormon and since I am going to tell investigators that they should read every day, maybe you all can do the same?

Papi, gracias for the wetwipes!  I love them!! And now the Superbowl is not important.  And I ate a can of sardines for dinner Thursday because I couldn’t eat in the cafeteria because it was the 50th anniversary of the MTC and there was a ton of people there.  Elder Holland and Elder Nelson spoke to us and gave us good talks.  And now it doesn’t matter to me who wins the Superbowl, but even so, tell me what happens.  Gracias.  I love you Papi  and I received all the things and I don’t need more. Muchas gracias for everything.

Michelle!  I saw your name in the newspaper!  How cool!!!  How is your school?  Well, I love you a lot.

Mother, happy birthday!  I am going to give you a letter still, but it might be later.  Good job in your exam!  You too fox!  I love feeling the Spirit and I pray every night.  And the food is fantastic, but yes, I eat healthy every day because I don’t want to be fat jaja I love you.  This Wednesday, I was a host, and it made me feel sad because it was the first time that I missed you all because I was with other new missionaries and their families and it made remember you, but now I am good.  I am way too busy to have missing feelings.  I love you!!

Stephen, the sisters told me that suave is funny!!  Jaja did you get my letter?  Well, I am sorry, I have to go now because I don’t have more time.  I am sorry fox, but hopefully you have a great week!  And also every night I say “ojalá que duerma con los ángeles” to my companion.

Goodbye and I love you familia!!

Élder Coffman
